Sculptor Gutzon Gorglum spent many hours observing the effects of light and shadow during the day in order to find the best veiwing opportunities for illuminating the images on Mount Rushmore at night.

A Light History of Mount Rushmore

• “First” Light:  In the 1940s, the images of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln were illuminated with army search lights.

• “Better” Light:  Since the 1990s, 32 lights with metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps using 18,800 watts of energy have been used to light the sculpture.

• “The Best is Yet to Come” Light:  December 2014, Musco Lighting company has donated a lighting system that will deliver a 90% energy savings using 1,600 directional LEDs!
